A major industrial operation in the region appears to be nearing its opening.
Last year, the U.S. Postal Service signed to occupy an industrial building of more than 620,000 square feet at Gateway85.
Gateway 85 is NorthPoint Development's massive Gaston County industrial park.
NorthPoint Development joined the GBA as an Investor in November of 2022.
What they’re saying: NorthPoint's Caleb Moore now says that USPS is "gearing up to actually start their operations here in the next month or so," adding that it is "putting a huge investment in that building."
The USPS said it is in the process of "hiring approximately 500 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees for Charlotte-area facilities, including the facility in Gaston County."
The Gaston County facility is part of USPS' 10-year Delivering for America plan, which aims to "modernize our mail and package processing network by combining and centralizing mail processing operations in approximately 60 new Regional Processing and Distribution Centers over the coming years," the spokesperson said.
NorthPoint recently delivered two more buildings there, wrapping up the second phase of the project. Moore said the developer's holdings at Gateway85, which is between Gastonia and Lowell along Interstate 85, now total nearly 400 acres.
Upon full buildout, NorthPoint projects the total investment there to reach $370 million with job creation of over 1,700.
Moore said three more buildings totaling around 1 million square feet are being plotted for future development at Gateway 85. If completed, that would bring the park's total footprint to nearly 4.5 million square feet.
