Stowe Family YMCA is expected to get some updates in the coming year to include an outdoor pool, new kids wing, and more. Management is expecting increased need for YMCA memberships as Belmont and Mount Holly’s populations continue to grow.
What they're saying: Stowe Family YMCA Executive Director Mary Moffitt says the 10,000-square-foot expansion will allow the facility to accommodate increased membership numbers.
By the numbers: The Stowe Family YMCA has 7,000 members, according to Moffitt.
Just before the pandemic hit in 2019, administration at the Stowe Family YMCA planned to give the facility a face-lift.
The combination of rising numbers of memberships and the facility’s pre-existing need for updates has brought the effort to revitalize the facility back to the forefront.
“It needs some love,” Moffitt said.
As it stands, administrators are planning to add a six-lane outdoor swimming pool with a splash pad, a brand new kids wing, and updates to locker rooms and other pre-existing amenities.
The pool is expected to give members access to new types of exercise and recreation, according to Moffitt.
She also said the team hopes a new kids wing will allow the facility more opportunity to develop local teens in their teen leadership program.
What's next: Moffitt is optimistic that the team will be able to start construction in 2024, and is expected to last a year.
The new parts of the facility will be added first to allow the Stowe Family YMCA to remain open through the duration of construction.
Administration has raised a few million of the $13.5 million it will take to complete this project.
“We’ve gotten such great support from the community,” Moffit said. “The YMCA is where community lives.”
